One Killed, Several Injured in Five-Vehicle Collision near Highway 395

LASSEN COUNTY, CA (January 22, 2025) – Tuesday morning, a fatal DUI crash on Highway 36 led to the arrest of William Dougherty

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the eastbound lanes of the freeway near Highway 395 around 7:47 a.m.

Based on the initial investigation, an eastbound Ford Club Wagon traveling at a high rate of speed rear-ended a Chevrolet Equinox. As a result, the impact pushed the Chevrolet Equinox into the back of a Freightliner.

In addition, the Ford also struck a Jeep Wrangler, sending the Jeep into a Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling ahead.

Responding paramedics pronounced the 47-year-old Susanville woman driving the Equinox dead at the scene. Meanwhile, her 10-year-old female passenger was airlifted to Renown Medical Center in Reno with major injuries.

Meanwhile, the drivers of the Wrangler and Silverado sustained minor injuries.

Police arrested the driver of the Ford Club Wagon, 49-year-old William R. Dougherty, of Sacramento for suspicion of DUI murder and vehicular manslaughter.

After receiving treatment for minor injuries at the Banner Lassen Medical Center, authorities booked Dougherty into the Lassen County Jail.
