OLDHAM COUNTY, TX (July 30, 2024) – Early Monday morning, Virginia Leutkahans was fatally struck in a pedestrian accident on Interstate 40.

First responders arrived to the scene around 2:01 a.m., near Vega on July 15th.

Investigators say the driver of a westbound 2018 Ford F-150 struck Leutkahans who was wearing dark-colored clothing and walking on the westbound lanes.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced 80-year-old Leutkahans, of Amarillo deceased at the scene.

DPS says the driver swerved in attempt to avoid a collision, but was unable to do so in time.

At this time, an active investigation to determine further information is still ongoing. Once available, more details will be provided.

Jaywalking, or crossing streets outside designated crosswalks, poses risks for pedestrian accidents, especially in high-traffic areas. Using designated crosswalks and waiting for the signal to cross ensures visibility to drivers and prevents accidents.

In this sorrowful time, we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Virginia Leutkahans.
