55-Year-Old Caltrans Worker Killed in Tow-Truck Collision near East Avenida Palizada

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (July 25, 2024) – Monday morning, a tow-truck crash on Interstate 5 took the life of Alexander Rodish.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene shortly before 9:30 a.m., on the northbound lanes of the freeway near East Avenida Palizada.

Investigators say a freeway service patrol tow-truck veered off the road for reasons unknown. As a result, the tow-truck hit a Caltrans vehicle and two Caltrans workers picking debris off the shoulder.

Responding emergency personnel declared one of the workers dead at the scene. On the same day, officials identified the deceased victim as 55-year-old Alexander Rodish.

Meanwhile, the tow-truck driver and the other Caltrans worker sustained minor injuries from the incident.

The impact of the crash also caused the Caltrans vehicle to launch over a curb and hit a Nissan Rogue traveling on the on-ramp. The Nissan driver also suffered minor injuries.

“Rodish worked for Caltrans since 2021 and is a dedicated public servant committed to making our roads safer for all Californians”, Gov. Gavin Newsom stated.
