26-Year-Old Driver Pronounced Dead after Wrong-Way Crash near Sweetwater

NOLAN COUNTY, TX (June 17, 2024) – Wednesday, Israel Beltran was killed and Lio Acero was hurt in a head-on collision on State Highway 70.

Around 6:40 a.m., first responders arrived to the southbound lanes of the freeway about six miles south of Sweetwater on June 5th.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says Beltran was driving his 2024 Chevrolet Equinox in the northbound lanes. Meanwhile, Acero was driving a 2019 Ford F-150 pickup-truck south.

For unknown reasons, 26-year-old Beltran crossed into oncoming lanes and crashed head-on with Acero. Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced Beltran dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, paramedics transported 62-year-old Lio Acosta Acero to Shannon Medical Center with major injuries.

Following preliminary duties, officers say both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time. Authorities have not yet determined that factors leading up to the collision, further investigation remains ongoing.
