14-Year-Old Girl Dies in DUI Collision near East Balboa Boulevard

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (May 29, 2023) – Saturday, Rosenda Smiley died and Jospeh Alcazar was arrested after a pedestrian crash on Palm Street.

Around 6:45 p.m., police officers responded to the scene near East Balboa Boulevard.

At this time, the circumstances leading up to the collision remain unclear. However, investigators say the involved driver remained at the scene and was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. 

Responding medical personnel declared a young female pedestrian dead at the scene. Authorities later identified the deceased juvenile as 14-year-old Rosenda Elizabeth Smiley of Rialto. 

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old driver from Fontana, Alcazar, was arrested for homicide-traffic fatality and cruelty to a child. Newport Beach Officials will provide more information regarding the fatal incident once available.
