Man Killed in Rear-End Crash on Interstate 5 [San Diego, CA]
Two-Vehicle Collision near Del Mar Heights Road Left One Fatality
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 29, 2024) – Early Thursday morning, a rear-end crash on Interstate 5 involving a tractor/trailer claimed the life of one male driver.
The fatal collision happened around 4:16 a.m., in the southbound lanes of the freeway just south of Del Mar Heights Road.
Based on the initial investigation, a silver Toyota Tundra collided with the back of a white Kenworth truck for unknown reasons.
Responding medical personnel declared the 39-year-old man driving the Tundra dead at the scene. However, his name remains undisclosed to the public, pending notification from the next of kin.
It was unclear if the Kenworth truck driver received injuries from the incident. San Diego officials closed the two right lanes of southbound Interstate 5 as crews cleared the scene. Furthermore, the roadway was reopened a short time later.
At this time, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine if intoxication played a role in the collision. Police will release additional information as it becomes available to the public.
