Luciano Sanchez Killed, Cyclist Hurt in Fiery Collision on Highway 1 [San Mateo County, CA]
52-Year-Old Man Fatally Injured in Fiery Accident near San Gregorio State Beach
SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA (December 4, 2023) – Friday afternoon, Luciano Sanchez was killed in a fiery collision on Highway 1.
Authorities responded to the northbound lanes of the freeway shortly before 2:00 p.m., near San Gregorio State Beach.
Based on initial investigation, a GMC Yukon collided with a bicyclist on the right shoulder. Afterward, the SUV veered into the southbound lanes where it crashed into a Chevrolet Silverado and a tree.
Upon impact, the GMC rolled over before coming to a stop in an embankment where it caught on fire.
Responding emergency personnel declared the GMC driver dead at the scene. Later, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased driver as 52-year-old Luciano Lopez Sanchez of Richmond.
Sanchez’s passenger sustained minor injuries while the 30-year-old male bicyclist from Woodside was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries. Meanwhile, the occupants of the Silverado remained unharmed.
The California Highway Patrol is working to determine if drugs and alcohol contributed to the crash.
