Head-On Crash near Atwater Left Two Fatalities

MERCED, CA (November 28, 2023) – A sedan vs SUV collision on Highway 99 claimed the lives of two people in the early hours of Thanksgiving. 

The fatal collision occurred around 4:15 a.m. near Atwater, just north of Westside Boulevard. 

Based on the initial investigation, a 2002 Hyundai Elantra traveling the wrong way collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe. 

Upon impact, the Chevrolet turned over and caught on fire. Police said the driver and the two passengers managed to exit the SUV before it caught on fire. 

However, the first responders extricated a female passenger from the burning SUV who later died. The driver of the Elantra was reported to have succumbed to the injuries as well. 

Meanwhile, paramedics transported the three other patients from the wreckage to area hospitals for minor to major injuries. 

At this time, the CHP only identified the deceased Elantra driver as a 22-year-old Modesto man. The deceased female passenger of the Tahoe was identified as a 35-year-old Modesto resident. 

Merced County officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal Highway 99 head-on crash.
