Two Pronounced Dead after Thanksgiving Two-Vehicle Crash near Applegate Road
MERCED, CA (November 28, 2023) – Early Thursday morning, two people were killed in a fiery wrong-way collision on Highway 99 near Atwater.
Authorities received reports of a vehicle traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 between Applegate Road and Atwater Boulevard.
Subsequently, the Hyundai Elantra drove two more miles before colliding head-on with a southbound Chevrolet SUV.
The impact of the crash caused the SUV to flip over and catch on fire. The 22-year-old driver of the Hyundai and the 30-year-old female passenger of the SUV died at the scene.
Meanwhile, emergency responders transported the three remaining occupants of the SUV to a Modesto trauma center for minor to major injuries.
At this time, the identity of the deceased Hyundai driver remains undisclosed to the public, pending notification from the next of kin. Merced County Officials continue to investigate the fiery crash.
