Tractor-Trailer Crash Near Middle River Bridge Resulted in Fatality

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA (November 7, 2023) – Early Friday evening, a head-on collision on Highway 4 took the life of a male driver. 

The deadly crash happened around 5:30 p.m. along the westbound lanes of Highway 4, just west of Middle River Bridge.

Based on the initial investigation, a westbound Nissan Maxima pulled into the opposing lanes to pass other vehicles ahead. 

An oncoming tractor-trailer attempted to stop, however, the Nissan collided head-on with the semi. The impact of the collision caused the driver of the tractor-trailer to lose control and enter the westbound lanes, colliding with a Mercedes. 

Eventually, the truck and the Mercedes came to rest on the north side of Highway 4. While responding emergency personnel spotted the Nissan resting on the south side of the highway. 

According to the California Highway Patrol, the Nissan driver sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Paramedics rushed the driver of the Mercedes to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. 

In the end, Caltrans closed off Highway 4 on both westbound and eastbound lanes for at least eight hours as crews cleared out the scene.
