Male Driver Pronounced Dead after Multi-Vehicle Accident near California Avenue

BAKERSFIELD, CA (October 11, 2023) – Thursday morning, one man was killed in a suspected DUI collision on Union Avenue.

First responders arrived to the scene around 10:02 a.m., near California Avenue on October 5th.

Upon arrival, authorities learned that a speeding northbound pickup-truck failed to stop at a red light on Union Avenue.

As a result, the pickup collided with a garbage truck, causing the garbage truck overturned and hit two other vehicles. Despite the life-saving efforts, paramedics pronounced the pickup-truck driver dead at the scene. His identity remains undisclosed to the public, pending notification from the next of kin. 

Police said the driver of the garbage truck and drivers of the two other vehicles were uninjured. 

Bakersfield officials closed the intersection as crews cleared the scene. Investigators suspect intoxication and speed as contributing factors leading up to the crash.
