25-Year-Old Oakland Man Arrested after Fatal Car Collision near Holly Street
OAKLAND, CA (September 26, 2023) – Sunday morning, Derrick Shaw and Vera Hampton were killed in a hit-and-run collision on 73rd Avenue.
Police responded to the scene shortly before 10:00 a.m., near Holly Street.
Officers say the driver of a stolen Lexus was heading north at high rates of speed on 73rd Avenue. Meanwhile, another southbound vehicle was attempting to turn left onto Holly Street.
As a result, the Lexus struck the passenger side of the turning vehicle, sending the impacted vehicle into another parked car.
Medical personnel arrived and pronounced two people inside the second vehicle dead at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics took a third passenger in the rear seat, a 48-year-old Richmond man, to a nearby hospital.
Following the initial collision, the driver of the stolen vehicle from Daly City exited their car and fled the scene on foot. The 25-year-old man from Oakland was eventually arrested for a suspected fatal hit-and-run.
On Monday, the Alameda County Coroner identified the two deceased victims as 64-year-old Shaw, of Richmond and 67-year-old Hampton, of Antioch.
