37-Year-Old Man Arrested after Pursuit Crash near Yosemite Parkway

MERCED, CA (September 8, 2023) – Thursday afternoon, Wayne West Jr., was arrested after a pursuit collision on East Main Street.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m., near Yosemite Parkway.

Per reports, Merced Police Officers were speaking to the driver identified as 28-year-old Karen Walker when the passenger, West Jr., attempted to put it into drive.

The vehicle then moved forward into a police unit vehicle. West then climbed on top of the driver while officers attempted to break the window for entry.

As police were detaining the driver, West sped off in the vehicle going south on the northbound lanes. Units did not attempt to follow him the wrong way on the freeway for safety reasons and later located him on foot near 12th and U Street.

Officers say West had multiple warrants out for his arrest. As a result, police booked him into the Merced County Jail under suspicion of attempted homicide of a peace officer, evading arrest and resisting as well as obstructing peace officers.

At this time, medics have not confirmed the extent of the officer’s injuries. Once available, further details will be provided.
