Two-Vehicle Collision Near Dimeo Lane Kills 32-Year-Old Motorcyclist

SANTA CRUZ, CA (July 5, 2023) – Wednesday evening, Juan Manuel Maldonado Carranza was killed in a motorcycle crash on Highway 1.

The collision occurred at around 6:16 p.m. along southbound Highway 1, just north of Dimeo Lane.

According to CHP, a 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle started passing traffic on the left by crossing the double-yellow lines.

Investigators said a 2001 Toyota Solara traveling ahead of the motorcycle slowed down and attempted to turn left onto a private driveway. The rider failed to stop in time and collided with the left side of the Toyota. The force of the collision ejected the motorcyclist onto the road.

The responding emergency personnel declared the motorcylist dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the 50-year-old female Toyota driver – identified to be a resident of Kyiv, Ukraine – was unharmed. 

Later, the California Highway Patrol identified the deceased rider as 32-year-old Juan Manuel Maldonado Carranza of Santa Cruz.

Police ruled out drugs and alcohol to be a factor in the incident. Santa Cruz Officials closed the roadway for at least three hours to investigate the fatal motorcycle crash.
