Chico Motorcyclist Killed in Head-On Crash Near State Route 36

TEHAMA COUNTY, CA (July 3, 2023) – Tuesday afternoon, Dante Velarga was injured in a deadly head-on collision along State Highway 32. 

The crash occurred around 3:35 p.m. in the westbound lanes of State Route 32, four miles east of Highway 36. 

Based on the initial investigation, a 2022 Honda Shadow motorcycle entered a right-hand curve while traveling at an unknown rate of speed. The rider lost control of the motorcycle and slid on his right side where it crossed the double yellow lines. 

At the same time, an eastbound 2020 Jeep Renegade driven by Dante Velarga of Westwood attempted to avoid the motorcycle but failed. As a result, both vehicles collided head-on and left the rider with fatal injuries. 

The first responders declared the 33-year-old motorcyclist dead at the scene. At this time, their identity remains undisclosed. 

Meanwhile, Valerga received minor injuries from the crash. Although, it was unclear if he was transported to a hospital for treatment. 

The California Highway Patrol ruled out intoxication to be the cause of the fatal crash.
