1 Killed, Multiple Injured in Fatal Crash near Treat Boulevard
WALNUT CREEK, CA (March 10, 2023) – Early Saturday, a driver was killed and multiple were hurt in a fire-truck collision on Interstate 680.
Police responded to the scene around 4:00 a.m., near Treat Boulevard.
Per reports, the driver of a Tesla lost control and struck a fire engine that was parked on an East Bay Freeway. Officers say the truck was there to shield a crew that was clearing another incident.
Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced the Tesla driver dead at the scene. Meanwhile, crews worked to cut open the car to free the trapped passenger.
Paramedics transported the severely injured passenger to a nearby hospital for further treatment. In addition, four firefighters inside the truck suffered minor injuries. Moreover, the impact damaged a $1.4 million ladder.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether the Tesla Model S was in auto-pilot mode or if the driver was intoxicated during the incident.
