Fatal Wrong-Way Collision on Loop 101 near 19th Avenue [Phoenix, AZ]
At Least One Dead after Loop 101 Head-On Accident in Phoenix
PHOENIX, AZ (November 30, 2021) – Early Saturday morning, at least one person was killed in a wrong-way collision on Loop 101.
Police responded to the scene around 3:00 a.m., after receiving multiple dispatch calls. According to reports, two vehicles collided near 19th Avenue.
Investigators say a wrong-way driver of a white car was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway. As a result, the driver collided head-on with an oncoming SUV.
During investigations, the driver of a red sports car traveling at speeds upwards of 100 mph failed to stop and slammed into the SUV.
Medics responded and treated a passenger inside the SUV, and a passenger inside the sports car for injuries. Due to the impact of the crash, the wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials currently believe that alcohol was a factor in both collisions. However, an active investigation is still currently underway.
Loop 101 was closed for several hours before it was later reopened around 9:00 a.m.
We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased driver. May you find comfort and strength during this time.
