Pedro Velarde Dead, Santiago Lucas Arrested after DUI Collision on Highway 180 [Fresno County, CA]
44-Year-Old Kerman Man Dead, Two Hospitalized after Head-On Collision near Grantland Avenue
FRESNO COUNTY, CA (November 27, 2024) – Friday night, Pedro Velarde was fatally struck by Santiago Lucas in a DUI crash on Highway 180.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene around 6:15 p.m., just west of Grantland Avenue.
According to reports, the driver of a westbound Chevrolet Silverado veered into oncoming lanes. As a result, the Silverado collided head-on with a Kia Optima traveling in the opposite direction.
Responding paramedics declared the Optima driver dead at the scene. He was later identified as 44-year-old Velarde, of Kerman.
Meanwhile, Velarde’s 14-year-old female and male passengers were transported to Community Regional Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries.
The Silverado driver – identified as 56-year-old Santiago Lopez Lucas of Fresno – was arrested after being medically cleared for minor injuries.
Officials booked Lucas into the Fresno County Jail for felony DUI and vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated. Lucas posted his $97,000 bail and was released on the 24th of November.
