62-Year-Old Forklift Operator Dies in Rollover Accident near Smurfit WestRock

YAKIMA COUNTY, WA (November 26, 2024) – Late Tuesday evening, John Scerbik was killed in a rollover forklift crash on Longfibre Road.

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 10:30 p.m., near Smurfit Westrock on November 5th.

According to Chief Deputy Coroner Marshall Slight, Scerbik was transporting materials to Westrock when the forklift he was operating veered off the roadway.

The forklift then overturned, and ended up in an embankment. The impact ejected Screbik from the vehicle, trapping him underneath. Police say that he was not wearing his seatbelt at that time.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced 62-year-old Scerbik dead at the scene.

Police have stated that the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries has taken over the investigation. Once available, further details will be provided.
