Male Driver Fatally Injured in Wrong-Way Crash near Melrose Drive

OCEANSIDE, CA (November 18, 2024) – Saturday night, one man was killed and Stephanie Zamora was hurt in a DUI collision on State Route 76.

Police officers responded to the scene around 9:26 p.m., on the eastbound lanes of the freeway just west of Melrose Drive.

Investigators say the driver of a tan Buick Century was traveling the wrong way and collided with a white Honda Clarity.

First responders declared the person driving the Buick dead at the scene. Officials only described the deceased driver as a man in his 30s.

Meanwhile, paramedics transported the Honda driver, 20-year-old Zamora, of Oceanside to Palomar Hospital in Escondido. Zamora sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the collision, according to medical reports.

Emergency personnel shut down the surrounding area for a brief time during cleanup and preliminary duties. At this time, authorities suspect intoxication to be a factor in the incident.

The Major Accident Investigation Team is leading the investigation. Anyone with additional information regarding the fatal crash is asked to contact Officer Kevin Lissner at (760) 435-4651.
