59-Year-Old Man Killed, Two Injured in Transit-Bus Collision near Van Buren Street

PHOENIX, AZ (November 11, 2024) – Monday morning, George Meletis was killed and two were injured in a transit-bus crash on 79th Avenue.

Authorities responded to the scene around 5:00 a.m., near Van Buren Street on October 7th.

Investigators reported that two transit employees boarded a small “Circulator” bus operated by Valley Metro. The driver suddenly released the brake, causing the bus to roll forward.

The transit-bus then struck 59-year-old Meletis, who was standing outside. In addition, the bus also collided with a parked full-sized bus.

Despite life-saving efforts, medics pronounced Meletis dead at the accident scene.

In addition, paramedics transported two transit employees to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Authorities have not released more information about the multi-vehicle crash on 79th Avenue but are actively pursuing leads.
