José Guillermo Castellanos González and Efrain Gutiérrez-Ávila Killed in Multi-Car Collision on Interstate 10 [Sun Lakes, AZ]
Two Fatalities Reported after Multi-Vehicle Collision near Riggs Road
SUN LAKES, AZ (November 6, 2024) – Wednesday, José Guillermo Castellanos González and Efrain Gutiérrez-Ávila died in a car crash on Interstate 10.
Around 12:00 p.m., dispatchers received calls near Riggs Road on the westbound lanes of the freeway on October 16th.
According to the Arizona DPS, the collision involved a two-axle box truck, a pickup truck, and three other vehicles. Investigators say all vehicles were heading west when the box-truck failed to slow down in time.
As a result, the box-truck collided with a pickup-truck and three other vehicles. In addition, the box-truck and pickup-truck both became engulfed in flames.
Despite life-saving efforts, the drivers of both trucks were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later identified them as 53-year-old González and 62-year-old Gutierrez-Ávila.
Meanwhile, two of the drivers in the three vehicles sustained minor injuries, and they were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Responding troopers blocked all lanes on the interstate between Riggs and Casa Blanca roads for several hours. Lanes were reopened by 6:30 p.m. and further investigation took place.
