One Pronounced Dead after Two-Vehicle Rollover Collision near MacArthur Boulevard

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (September 18, 2024) – Sunday evening, a wrong-way crash on 73 Freeway left one driver dead and another injured. 

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the southbound lanes of the freeway, just north of MacArthur Boulevard around 9:26 p.m.

Based on the initial investigation, a Land Rover collided with a BMW sedan in the fast lane. Upon impact, the BMW overturned several times before catching fire. 

Responding emergency personnel declared the driver of the Land Rover dead at the scene after being ejected from their vehicle. 

Meanwhile, paramedics transported the BMW driver to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. 

In the end, the CHP closed the southbound lanes of 73 Freeway for investigation and diverted the traffic at Campus Drive. Newport Beach officials will provide additional information regarding the fatal wrong-way crash once available.
