14-Year-Old Bicyclist Hospitalized after Garbage-Truck Collision near La Mesa Boulevard

LA MESA, CA (September 11, 2024) – Thursday, Caleb Carvalho was seriously injured in a garbage-truck vs bicycle crash on University Avenue.

First responders arrived to the scene just before 8:00 a.m., near La Mesa Boulevard on September 5th.

Investigators reported that an EDCO truck turned and hit 14-year-old Carvalho as he was biking along University Avenue.

Carvalho tried to swerve out of the way, however, his bike got caught under the truck’s rear tires.

The impact left him with serious injuries, including pelvic and femur fractures, requiring two surgeries and eight weeks of bed rest.

Meanwhile, the EDCO truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators do not suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the two-vehicle collision on University Avenue and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
