Two Pronounced Dead after High-Speed Collision near Doliva Drive

SAN DIEGO, CA (September 3, 2024) – Monday, Officer Austin Machitar and a teenager died in a high-speed crash on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.

The San Diego Police Department responded to the scene near Doliva Drive around 11:30 p.m., on August 26th.

Troopers attempted to perform a traffic stop on a BMW that was traveling at high rates of speed in the area. However, the teen driver failed to comply and the pursuit began.

The suspect led Officer Machitar and his passenger Zach Martinez on a short pursuit before colliding with the patrol car and two other vehicles.

Emergency medics arrived and pronounced Machitar and the teen suspect dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, Officer Martinez suffered critical injuries and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The two other drivers involved were also in stable condition.

Consequently, responding authorities blocked the intersection while they cleared out the wreck. All lanes reopened after the initial investigation.

The San Diego Police Officers Association mourns the loss of Officer Machitar. No additional information was added by the officials at this time.
