17-Year-Old Girl Dies in Pedestrian Collision near 72nd Avenue

OAKLAND, CA (August 26, 2024) – Monday, Mardenia Carrillo Lopez died and another was hurt in a pedestrian crash on International Boulevard. 

First responders arrived to the scene around 6:30 p.m., near 72nd Avenue at the 7200 block of International Boulevard.

Investigators say the driver of a speeding vehicle was heading east and struck Lopez and her mother who were walking within a marked crosswalk. Upon impact, the driver fled the scene without rendering aid or contacting authorities.

Shortly after, the suspect driver crashed into several other vehicles at the 8400 block of International Boulevard. 

Despite life-saving efforts, first responders pronounced one of the pedestrians dead at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics took her mother to a nearby hospital in stable condition. 

The Alameda County Coroner later identified the deceased victim as 17-year-old Lopez, of Oakland.

Following preliminary duties, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputies also managed to arrest the speeding driver. It appeared that alcohol might have contributed to the collision.
