Long Tham Pham Dead, Veronica Bear Hurt, Juan Huerta-Palacios Arrested after DUI Crash on Monterey Road [San Jose, CA]
34-Year-Old Police Officer Killed in DUI Accident near Palm Avenue
SAN JOSE, CA (August 12, 2024) – Saturday evening, Long Tham Pham was killed and Veronica Bear was hurt in a DUI crash on Monterey Road.
Around 9:56 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Palm Avenue and Monterey Road in the South San Jose area.
According to police, the driver of a silver 2022 Dodge Charger struck the unoccupied patrol vehicle while traveling southbound on Monterey.
The impact of the crash caused the patrol car to hit the two Community Service Officers standing outside of the vehicle.
Responding emergency personnel rushed the two officers to a hospital where one of them died from their injuries. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner later identified the deceased officer as 34-year-old Long Tham Pham of San Jose.
The second officer remained at the hospital for treatment of major injuries and is expected to survive.
Police eventually arrested the Dodge driver – 44-year-old Juan Huerta-Palacios, of Morgan Hill – for gross vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI. Officers determined that Huerta-Palacios had prior arrests for DUI in the state of California.
