33-Year-Old Long Man Killed in Hit-and-Run near 14th Street

LONG BEACH, CA (August 7, 2024) – Friday evening, police arrested Guillermo Penaloza after a fatal hit-and-run crash on Cherry Avenue. 

Authorities responded to the scene around 7:00 p.m., in the area of 14 Street and Cherry Avenue. 

Based on reports, officers working “proactive patrols” spotted a Chevrolet Suburban SUV where they had a brief verbal exchange. Officers then noticed the driver fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.

The suburban then collided with a four-door Saturn sedan that was heading south on Cherry Avenue. 

Paramedics rushed the Saturn driver – only described as a 33-year-old man from Long Beach – to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. His unidentified female passenger was also hospitalized and remains in critical condition. 

After the crash, the driver of the Suburban fled the scene on foot before authorities apprehended the suspect. Police booked 34-year-old Guillermo Penaloza, of Long Beach into jail with vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, and possession of a stolen vehicle with bail set at $50,000.
