49-Year-Old Woman Fatally Struck in Hit-and-Run Accident near Albuquerque Street
ROSWELL, NM (August 5, 2024) – Sunday morning, Nancy Caro-Chavez was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian collision on South Main Street.
The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m., at the 500 block of South Main Street near Albuquerque Street on July 21st.
Per reports, the driver of an SUV struck Caro-Chavez and immediately fled the scene without rendering aid or contacting police.
Upon arrival, first responders located 49-year-old Caro-Chavez lying on the roadway with no signs of life. Despite life-saving efforts, medics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
During preliminary duties, authorities found a red SUV with damages to its front, and they conducted a traffic stop at the 1800 block of North Main Street.
Eventually, police arrested the driver who was later identified as 25-year-old Santiago Hernandez, of Roswell. He was determined to be driving under the influence.
Consequently, troopers booked Hernandez into the Chaves County Detention Center where he faces charges of homicide by vehicle, aggravated DWI, reckless driving, and driving without a license.
