One Fatally Struck in Pedestrian vs. Auto Collision near South 19th Street

TACOMA, WA (July 31, 2024) – Sunday afternoon, one person died and another was hospitalized after a pedestrian accident on State Route 16.

Authorities responded around 1:40 p.m., on the westbound lanes of the freway near South 19th Street on July 7th.

The Washington State Patrol say the driver of a westbound vehicle struck a pedestrian that was crossing the road. Upon impact, the driver called 911 and remained at the scene.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Police officers have not yet released the identity of the deceased victim.

Troopers evaluated the male driver at the scene and say he did not display any signs of impairment. Paramedics transported his female passenger to a nearby hospital for further treatment of unspecified injuries.

Emergency crews blocked the westbound lanes for about two hours until it was reopened. At this time, an active investigation to determine further information about the fatal pedestrian accident on State Route 16 is still currently underway.
