25-Year-Old Man Pronounced Dead after Pedestrian Collision near Shoemaker Road
HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA (July 29, 2024) – Friday night, Joseph McCovey was killed and Neo McKindle and Dawnalee Rangel were involved in a crash.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene around 11:40 p.m., on State Route 96 just west of Shoemaker Road.
Investigators say a man stepped onto the road directly into the path of a westbound 2015 Kia Soul. As a result, the Kia struck the pedestrian.
Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Authorities later identified the male victim as 25-year-old Joseph McCovey.
Following the collision, the Kia driver – identified as 18-year-old McKindle – went to Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Station to report the incident.
Officers said McKindle and his 19-year-old passenger, Rangel, cooperated with the investigation.
At this time, police are working to determine if drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident. Anyone with additional information regarding the fatal State Route 96 two-vehicle crash is encouraged to contact local officers as soon as possible.
