34-Year-Old Wrong-Way Driver Pronounced Dead after Head-On Collision near State Route 179

CAMP VERDE, AZ (July 11, 2024) – Early Wednesday morning, Johnny Gutierrez was pronounced dead following a crash on Interstate 17.

Authorities responded to the scene around 2:00 a.m., on the southbound lanes of the freeway near State Route 179 on June 26th.

Investigators say that 34-year-old Gutierrez was heading north in the southbound lanes for reasons unknown. As a result, he collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced Gutierrez dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, four occupants of the involved vehicle suffered serious injuries, and authorities transported them to the hospital for treatment. At this time, impairment was suspected as a factor in the crash. Further investigation remains ongoing.
