27-Year-Old Female Pilot Dies and Co-Pilot Injured after Plane Crashes near Gainesville Municipal Airport

GAINESVILLE, TX (July 3, 2024) – Tuesday evening, Bailey Maldonado was killed and James Watts was injured in a plane crash on County Road 404.

Authorities responded to the scene just before 9:00 p.m., near Gainesville Municipal Airport on June 11th.

According to reports, a single-engine Cessna 172R was operated by 27-year-old female pilot instructor, Maldonado, with her co-pilot, 26-year-old Watts.

Investigation showed that the plane departed from Denton Enterprise Airport around 7:45 p.m. The plane was heading to the airport at the time when it crashed.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced Maldonado dead at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics transported Watts to Medical City Denton with serious wounds.

No other information was released about the crash at this time, and the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration is handling further investigation.
