Woman Dead, Mark Anthony Bengal and Phillip Mattson Arrested after DUI Crash on Interstate 15 [Bonsall, CA]
One Dead, One Hospitalized after Five-Vehicle Collision near Old Highway 395
BONSALL, CA (June 25, 2024) – Police arrested Mark Anthony Bengal and Phillip Mattson Wednesday, after a deadly DUI crash on Interstate 15.
Dispatchers received calls around 11:40 p.m., on the southbound lanes of the freeway near Old Highway 395.
For reasons under investigation, the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended a Nissan Titan. The Chevrolet then became disabled in the southbound lanes, where it was hit by a passing Volkswagen Tiguan.
Additionally, the driver of a Toyota Camry also rear-ended the Volkswagen, while a Kia Soul hit the front left side of the Chevrolet.
Responding emergency personnel declared the 32-year-old female passenger, from Compton inside the Camry died at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics transported the 32-year-old Perris man driving the Camry to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities eventually arrested the Chevy driver, 26-year-old Mark Anthony Bengal of Chula Vista, for suspected felony DUI. The Volkswagen driver identified as 80-year-old Phillip Mattson of Encinitas, was also arrested for the same charges.
Officials are asking those who witnessed the fatal Interstate 15 multi-vehicle crash to contact the CHP Oceanside Area office at 760-643-3400.
