Texas Missionary Couple Dead after Suspected DUI Collision near Manning Avenue
FRESNO COUNTY, CA (May 27, 2024) – Saturday evening, Mary and Paul Hardin died and David Alvarado was arrested after a rear-end crash.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., on the northbound lanes of Highway 41 near Manning Avenue.
California Highway Patrol officers say Alvarado was driving a Ford F-250 and rear-ended a Nissan Sentra and a Chevrolet Camaro that were stopped at a red light.
Responding medical personnel declared the woman driving the Nissan, 65-year-old Mary, of Helotes, Texas dead at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics transported her passenger, 69-year-old Paul to a hospital where he passed away on Monday.
Crews say the couple was serving as missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Authorities eventually arrested the Ford driver, identified as 54-year-old David Alvarado of Madera, for felony DUI. At this time, the California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. Once available, further details will be provided.
