44-Year-Old Motorcyclist Dies in Five-Vehicle Collision near Carpenter Street
CARMEL, CA (May 16, 2024) – Early Sunday morning, Ricardo De Orta-Garcia was killed in a motorcycle crash on Highway 1.
Authorities responded to the northbound lanes of the freeway just south of Carpenter Street on May 12th around 5:50 a.m.
Investigation showed that the 17-year-old male driver of a black Ford F-150 was heading south and crashed into a utility pole. The Ford eventually came to rest on the southbound lanes.
The impact caused wires from a pole to scatter across the highway, resulting in four more vehicles colliding. The involved vehicles included a red and black Honda CBR1000 motorcycle driven by a 44-year-old Orta-Garcia.
Investigators also say all vehicles were traveling in the southbound lanes.
Despite life-saving efforts, medics later pronounced 17-year-old Orta-Garcia deceased. Meanwhile, the 17-year-old driver was detained but he was later released to his parents.
At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision, and further investigation is ongoing.
