Teen, Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 5 [Chula Vista, CA]
Two Pronounced Dead after Head-On Collision near Palomar Street Exit
CHULA VISTA, CA (May 14, 2024) – Early Wednesday morning, a teen and a female driver were killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5.
Around 3:20 a.m., first responders arrived to the southbound lanes of the freeway near Palomar Street.
Per reports, witnesses noticed a speeding red Honda Civic heading north in the southbound lanes near Camino De La Plaza.
Shortly after, the wrong-way driver collided head-on with an oncoming Dodge Challenger, just north of Palomar Street.
The impact of the crash caused one of the vehicles to catch on fire. First responders arrived and declared the 16-year-old boy driving the Challenger and the 67-year-old San Diego woman driving the Civic dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved.
Chula Vista officials issued a SigAlert around 4:15 a.m. and diverted the traffic off the freeway. Authorities are asking those who witnessed the fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 to contact the CHP San Diego office at 858-293-6000.
