17-Year-Old Boy Dead, Woman Arrested after DUI Scooter Crash near South Street
LONG BEACH, CA (May 14, 2024) – Early Sunday, Brandon Cabrera was killed and Karen Mativa was arrested after a crash on Orange Avenue.
Authorities responded to the intersection of Orange Avenue and South Street around 12:40 a.m.
According to the Long Beach police, Mativa was driving a northbound 2012 Cadillac SUV and hit the teen riding the scooter.
However, the SUV driver did not pull over and continued traveling north before crashing into an apartment building.
First responders transported the teen to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities later identified the deceased victim as 17-year-old Brandon Cabrera.
Following the crash, police managed to arrest the Cadillac driver after initially fleeing the scene on foot. Officials booked 35-year-old Mativa, of Compton for felony DUI, hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The Long Beach officials are asking those who witnessed the fatal DUI crash to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
