25-Year-Old Driver Pronounced Dead after Three-Vehicle Crash near Mile Marker 48

LUBBOCK, TX (May 8, 2024) – Early Friday morning, Evelyn Merced-Rojas was killed in a head-on collision on Interstate 27.

Authorities responded to the scene around 6:30 a.m., at the 1100 block of Interstate 27 near mile marker 48 on April 12th.

Per reports, Merced-Rojas was driving a Ford EcoSport south in the northbound lanes. As a result, the Ford struck a Chevrolet pickup-truck, driven by 25-year-old Deja Sade Garcia, with 25-year-old Jared Jeffrey Smith as the passenger, head-on.

The pickup-truck was then pushed into a passenger vehicle driven by Edwin Antonio Argueta.

Paramedics transported Garcia and Smith to University Medical Center in Lubbock for treatment of their injuries. In addition, crews took 54-year-old Argueta to Covenant Hospital, in Plainview.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced 25-year-old Merced-Rojas dead at the scene.

At this time, an active investigation to determine further information is still currently underway.
