22-Year-Old Firefighter Recruit Pronounced Dead after Multi-Vehicle Collision near Campo de Cahuenga

STUDIO CITY, CA (April 18, 2024) – Early Monday morning, a two-vehicle crash along 101 Freeway claimed the life of Jacob Fuerte. 

Authorities responded to the scene around 5:00 a.m., on the northbound lanes of the freeway near Campo de Cahuenga.

According to CHP, a firefighter driving a 2000 Jeep collided with a 2021 Ford driven by 36-year-old Derek Tapia of Montclair. The firefighter then exited his vehicle before being struck by an unknown vehicle, leaving him with fatal injuries. 

First responders declared the firefighter, identified as 22-year-old Jacob Fuerte of Riverside, dead at the scene. 

Fuerte was in week 10 of a 20-week training program for the Los Angeles Fire Department. His father is a 17-year veteran firefighter/paramedic in the department.

Emergency personnel shut down the surrounding area for a brief time during cleanup and preliminary duties. At this time, Studio City Officials are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run. However, the identity of the possible suspect remains undisclosed to the public.
