61-Year-Old Man Pronounced Dead after Pickup-Truck Crash near Dimmitt

CASTRO COUNTY, TX (February 26, 2024) – Thursday afternoon, Russell Smallwood was killed in a pickup-truck collision on US 385.

The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m., on the northbound lanes of the freeway near Dimmitt, on February 15th.

Officers say 61-year-old Smallwood was driving a southbound 2016 Ford F-450, towing a trailer about 9 miles north of Dimmitt. The Ford suddenly veered into the northbound lanes and sideswiped a 2021 GMC Sierra that was also towing a trailer.

The GMC, driven by 45-year-old Tranquilino Garza, jackknifed in the northbound lanes. Meanwhile, the Ford came to rest in a nearby ditch.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced 61-year-old Smallwood dead at the scene.

At this time, an active investigation to determine further information is still currently underway. Once available, more details will be provided.
