Two Drivers Pronounced Dead after 2-Car Accident on Witter Springs Road

LAKE COUNTY, CA (February 22, 2024) – Monday, Serhii Kalynovskyi and Evaristo Hernandez were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 20.

Officers responded to the scene around 6:24 a.m., on the westbound lanes of the freeway just east of Witter Springs Road.

Per reports, the driver of a westbound 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup-truck attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle ahead. The Nissan then swerved into the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2011 Toyota Prius.

First responders declared the Prius driver and a passenger from the Nissan dead at the scene. Officials later identified the Prius driver as 59-year-old Kalynovskyi, of Miranda and the pickup-truck passenger as 43-year-old Hernandez, of Ukiah.

Meanwhile, paramedics transported the 44-year-old man driving the Nissan and another passenger to a hospital with major injuries.

Following preliminary duties, police arrested the pickup-truck driver for driving under the influence of alcohol. At this time, Officer K. Brown of the California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
