Joseph Anthony Waltman and Alejandra Lopez Fatally Struck in Pedestrian Collision on Interstate 10 [Phoenix, AZ]
Two Pronounced Dead after Pedestrian Accident near 40th Street
PHOENIX, AZ (January 11, 2023) – Monday morning, Joseph Anthony Waltman and Alejandra Lopez died in a pedestrian collision on Interstate 10.
The first incident happened just before 6:20 a.m., along the eastbound lanes of the freeway near 40th Street on December 11th.
According to Phoenix police, 24-year-old Lopez was walking when she was struck by three vehicles. The driver that struck Lopez fled the scene without rendering aid or contacting authorities.
Shortly after the first collision, a second pedestrian accident happened just before 2:00 p.m., when a man ran across the traffic lanes and attempted to get inside a vehicle.
Moreover, a semi-truck struck the man, later identified as 34-year-old Joseph Anthony Waltman. Waltman succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the semi remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. Impairment was suspected on both Waltman and Lopez, Arizona DPS Bart Graves said and further investigation is still ongoing.
