25-Year-Old Driver Pronounced Dead after Wrong-Way Collision near Mile Post 5
VANCOUVER, WA (January 2, 2024) – Wednesday, Ryan Smith died and Zion Farias Vasquez was arrested after a crash on State Route 14.
The incident happened shortly before 9:40 p.m., on the westbound lanes of the freeway near Mile Post 5 on December 20th.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision involved a 2007 Volvo S40, a 2009 Mazda MX, a 2022 Volkswagen Passat, and a 2007 Toyota Camry.
Investigators say the Volvo was traveling east in the westbound lanes and collided head-on with the Mazda and the Volkswagen.
Upon impact, the Mazda was pushed into the path of the Toyota. As a result, the 25-year-old driver of the Volvo, later identified as Ryan M. Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moreover, paramedics transported two injured occupants from inside the Volkswagen to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
Following preliminary duties, police charged the Mazda driver, 25-year-old Vasquez of Dalles, with DUI. At this time, further investigation is still currently ongoing.
