Ashley Vailes Dies in Red-Light Collision on 35th Avenue [Phoenix, AZ]
19-Year-Old Woman Pronounced Dead after Striking Power Pole near Thunderbird Road
PHOENIX, AZ (December 26, 2023) – Thursday morning, Ashley Vailes was killed in a red-light collision on 35th Avenue.
Authorities responded to the scene shortly before 9:00 a.m., near Thunderbird Road on December 21st.
Per reports, Vailes was driving east on Thunderbird and ran a red light at the intersection. There, she struck a police-vehicle that was attempting to turn onto southbound 35th Avenue.
Vailes then struck a power pole, and the vehicle became engulfed in flames. Emergency crews arrived to extinguish the flames and remove Vailes from the vehicle.
Due to the extent of her condition, medics later pronounced 19-year-old Vailes deceased.
In addition, paramedics transported the police officer to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Crews blocked the intersection during cleanup duties and motorists were advised to avoid the area. It has been reopened since, and the crash is still under active investigation.
