David Barajas Airlifted, Steven Mahoney Involved in Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 198 [Kings County, CA]
24-Year-Old Man Pronounced Dead after Head-On Collision near 12th Avenue
KINGS COUNTY, CA (December 5, 2023) – Sunday, David Barajas and Steven Mahoney were involved in a fatal wrong-way crash on Highway 198.
Around 2:00 a.m., police responded to the scene on the eastbound lanes near 12th Avenue.
For reasons under investigation, the driver of a Toyota Corolla was traveling the wrong way on the highway. The Toyota eventually collided with an eastbound Ford F-250, driven by Barajas.
Upon impact, the Toyota caught fire while the Ford overturned and landed on top of a Kia Soul, driven by 63-year-old Mahoney.
Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced the 24-year-old man driving the Corolla dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, emergency personnel airlifted Barajas to a nearby hospital for further treatment. In addition, crews took two other passengers to a hospital via ambulance.
Moreover, paramedics also transported Mahoney and his passenger to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. At this time, Kings County Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
