62-Year-Old Cyclist Hospitalized after Hit-and-Run Accident near 21st Street

AHWATUKEE, AZ (October 31, 2023) – Tuesday, Steve Elwell was hospitalized after a hit-and-run bicycle collision on Chandler Boulevard.

Police responded to the scene around 4:45 a.m., near 21st Street on October 3rd.

Officers say 62-year-old Elwell was riding eastbound on Chandler Boulevard and attempted to turn left onto 21st Street. There, the driver of a reckless vehicle struck the cyclist and immediately fled the scene east on Chandler Boulevard.

Medical personnel took Elwell to a nearby hospital with a concussion, five broken ribs and other injuries. Reports indicate that a pastor driving in the area witnessed the incident and immediately called authorities.

The pastor identified the vehicle as a black 2020 Dodge Challenger with a plate number 0345.

Phoenix Police Department are investigating the crash, and they are encouraging witnesses to call the Phoenix Police or the detective on the case at (602)262-4505.
