Chui Kyu Shin Arrested after Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash near Mountain View Avenue
SELMA, CA (October 19, 2023) – Monday evening, Maria Esquivel was fatally struck in a DUI collision on Highway 99.
Officers responded to the scene around 9:15 p.m., on the northbound lanes of the freeway just north of Mountain View Avenue.
Per reports, the driver of a Chevrolet van rear-ended a slow traveling Ford Explorer. Upon impact, the Ford veered off the road and struck a concrete barrier.
Medics arrived and pronounced the back seat passenger, 71-year-old Esquivel, of Clovis dead at the scene. In addition, the 76-year-old male Ford driver and the two female passengers, ages 72 and 26, suffered minor injuries.
Medical responders rushed all three patients to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Meanwhile, CHP officers arrested the van driver for DUI and booked them into Fresno County Jail. Police identified the suspect as 61-year-old Chul Kyu Shin, of Van Nuys.
