Car Versus Pickup-Truck Crash near Caruthers Left 69-Year-Old Man Dead

FRESNO, CA (October 3, 2023) – Tuesday morning, a two-vehicle collision on Dinuba Avenue claimed the life of James Mattos. 

The deadly crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Dinuba and West Avenue, just north of Caruthers. 

According to California Highway Patro, a Nissan Altima occupied by two men collided with the rear-end of a pickup truck. 

Upon impact, both vehicles went off the road and into an orchard, causing one of the vehicles to end up on its roof. 

The truck driver sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased victim as 69-year-old James Mattos of Fresno. 

Two other men inside the Nissan were hospitalized for treatment of major to moderate injuries.

A large portion of the roadway was temporarily shut down to allow for cleanup and preliminary duties.
