Maia Correia Pronounced Dead Following Bicycle Accident on Hanover Avenue [Oakland, CA]
4-Year-Old Girl Bicycle Collision near Lakeshore Avenue
OAKLAND, CA (September 13, 2023) – Last month, a bicycle accident near Lake Merritt took the life of 4-year-old Maia Correia.
The deadly crash happened on August 5th, on Hanover and Lakeshore Avenue. Reports indicated that a car door opened in front of a bicycle in the bike lane, knocking it over.
According to the police, Maia was riding in the child seat on the back of her father’s bike. The impact from the collision caused her to fall to the ground, leaving her helmet cracked upon impact.
Medical responders evaluated Maia and her father, Jadd Correia, before being sent home a short while later. Upon arriving home, her family reported that Maia started vomiting and fell unconscious.
She was immediately rushed to a hospital where they discovered a blot clot between her brain and her skull. Tragically, Maia Correia died from a brain hemorrhage at Oakland’s Children’s Hospital.
At this time, the Oakland biking community is asking Oakland officials to do more to protect bicyclists and pedestrians.
No words can mend the broken hearts and sorrow felt during this delicate moment. Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of Maia Correia.
